Recognizing the importance of "Research and Development" both for the i mproved quality of our students and the faculty, a R&D Cell headed by the Dean has been established. Following is a brief report of the activities. A Flow Visualization Facility has been designed, fabricated and installed in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. This is a very versatile facility in which student projects, research and consultancy work can be carried out. An SLR camera is procured and the necessary lighting arrangement using halogen lamps is made. All the departments have been encouraged to have In-House Student Projects for the final year batch so that a research tempo and atmosphere is built up over a period of time.
Following In-House Student Projects with research content have been completed in the last semester in the Department of Mechanical Engineering:
- Flow Field Around Multiple Cylinders – A Flow Visualization Study (This has been carried out using the Flow Visualization Facility).
- Design and Fabrication of Apparatus to Analyze the Effect of Suppressor on Vortex Formation while Draining from a Cylindrical Tank.Multi-purpose Pedal Operated Mobile Oven.
- Conversion of Kinetic Energy of Moving Person into Electrical Energy.

Research project sanctioned under the VTU Research Grant Scheme:
Title: Experimental and Computational study of Flow Through Baffles
Investigators: Dr.B.H.Lakshmana Gowda (PI) Mr.B.K.Srinivas (COI) Grant Sanctioned: Rs. 8 lakhs Period: Two years Project just started
It is planned to construct a 50 kg capacity coke-fired pit furnace to melt grey cast iron to carry out studies on properties of low carbon grey cast iron.
