Teaching and assessment
Our teaching was inspected by the government's Quality Assurance Agency in 2003 and we have been awarded the highest possible ratings in every area. We were given the maximum grade of 'highly commended' for the effectiveness of our learning and teaching, student achievement and progression, and the learning resources and facilities we provide. Teaching is delivered via a mixture of supervised laboratories, lectures, tutorials and exercise classes. We are one of very few computer science departments in the UK to have been awarded the highest possible ratings for our teaching.
Moreover, we are one of only 11 departments in the UK to have been assessed by the government as having internationally excellent research as well as excellent teaching.
In your first term you meet weekly with your Academic Adviser, to support your coursework and help you settle into the pattern of university life. In your final year, you carry out your degree project supervised closely by a member of staff on a topic of your choice. We offer a very wide range of final-year options, many of which include topics in current research.
Careers
Our graduates have an excellent recruitment record, with the vast majority finding employment or taking higher degrees within six months of leaving Birmingham. Career destinations include software engineering, computer consultancy and management. To further develop graduate opportunities for our students the department has recently appointed a Student Employment Liaison Officer.
Each year we organise job fairs, presentations from companies and a web-based directory of graduate recruiters. A number of blue-chip companies offer placement opportunities for our students.
You will also benefit from our research contacts within industry and from initiatives such as CERCIA, our centre for research and technology transfer in computational intelligence. We have good relationships with companies like BT, Thales, Hewlett-Packard, Honda, QinetiQ and Rolls-Royce.
